Messing around with
The Georgia Tech Home Page
The Early Years

I'm not sure if the version of the home page to the left is really the "first" Georgia Tech Home Page; if not, it's pretty close to it. The original GT webmaster, Michael Mealling, put up a page like the one at left using a gif picture of the famous Tech Tower.

After I was hired to help with the home page, I helped Michael with the editing of the home page and all of the subpages. At the time, I was still a full-time graduate student in IDT, and one day I found myself bored between classes. Having just a couple of hours to kill, I got a great idea: steal the "T" off the picture of the tower. It's been a tradition at GT to actually steal a T from the signs on top of the tower. I'm not that ambitious, so I thought I would do my part by stealing it digitally. So I fired up Photoshop and:

Yeah, I know, it's subtle. I put it up on the web page and nobody noticed. It sat that way for about two months until I decided to try stealing the other T:

I replaced the image on the home page with the new version and two months later, Ben Scott noticed the missing T. For a few days after the discovery of my prank, in order to encourage more people to use the web , Michael and I toyed with the idea of having a "hunt for the T" contest on the web site. Imagine that, we felt we had to actually encourage people to use the WWW. 1994 was a great year, eh? I made a GIF out of the missing T, but we never did put it on any page.

Also, on Halloween 1994, we replaced the picture with this "spooky" version created by Nick Hess.
