By any other name, it's still black and
white, and while it may be really nifty
for your techies (sorry for the pun), it
looks crappy. I have a color TV and a
color monitor so I can see things in
color. If I wanted to see things in B&W
I would save the money and buy B&W
monitors. I'm really happy that you are
so enthused by this truly groundbreaking
technology. Honestly, your page sucks.

bad. If this is for real, it sucks.

Great work, guys!!! You've gotten quite
the range of reactions from people.

What makes this joke really funny is
that apparently, the bandwidth-saving
argument sounds plausible to lots of
people out there, even quasi-technical
folks.

So even when the change is due to April
Fool's Day, they're *still* paranoid
that the world's going to find out about
your new "trick". :-)

I especially like the folks that bitch
about the page from top to bottom, then
say "I hope this isn't an April Fool's
Day joke". (If they want to know, why
don't they wait until April 2nd?)

P.S. You'd better be careful ---------------------------------------------------------------------- "Network

The new greyscale is nothing less than
ugly. The yellow and white looked much
better. Actually, the older design of

really better than this new one with
frames. Oh well, its just an opinion.

C'mon...a grayscale mainpage? How much
is that going to reduce traffic load?
Are we that desperate for computing
power?

The grayscaling is a bad idea. Since
it only applies to the main page, it
does little for the unity of the
gatech.edu site. It's also a tad
annoying, since our colors aren't
exactly gray and white.

At first, I thought someone was playing
an April Fool's joke on gatech. I guess
the joke's on us. As a student, I urge
you to remove this needless change on
the webpage; it's an embarrasment to
students, faculty, and staff of GT.

I cannot thank you enough for changing
the homepage. Like many, I was born
with very few cones. Oh, how I labor to
read web pages! It's good to see the
administration finally recognize the
needs of the cone-challenged, or, as we
like to call ourselves, rod-reliant. I
can only imagine that the school will
have an amazing influx of applications
from my rod-reliant brothers and
sisters.

Subject: (grayscale) Ga Tech goes Greyscale
----------------------------------------------------------------------
While I understand and support
the new switch to greyscale technology,
I was wondering if it might not be a
better idea to adapt the technology
to use amber? If you recall, back
in the early 80's monitor used with
computers started out as Black & White,
then switched to Monochrome which
actually used levels of green, and
finally to "amber". The amber monitors
were proven by scientists to be
easier on the eyes. While the switch
to Amberscale(tm) might infringe
on those users who are insensitive
to amber, the benefits of better
eyesight for those who are not will far
outweigh the negatives. This way
Georgia Tech can be seen as a leader
in Egonomic Web design.

Just a thought.

Subject: (grayscale) Comments on Grayscale
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am an OIT/EIS employee. I can't
believe my eyes! This seems like going
backwards to me. While we in OIT may
care more about bandwidth and response
time than anyone else, our customers are
depending on this site for student
recruiting purposes. I think we just
shot them in the foot.

This looks dowdy and old-fashioned. I
am sympathetic to the visually-impaired
since I *am* one, but this is going to
put us at a disadvantage in the eyes of
everyone else compared to other schools'
sites.

I do *not* think we should adopt this as
a standard, and I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU
HAVEN'T CONSULTED OUR major Web
*CUSTOMERS*,(Admissions, Registrar's
Office, Financial Aid) FIRST!!

By all means please share this with
Gordon Wishon and all others involved.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I understand the traffic benefits
of going to no-color, but frankly
it makes Tech look like it could be
a Best Grab School of 1958 instead
of 1998. The flair and feel of
our home page says alot about our
environment and personality as a
whole. Tech is depressing and
bland enough without having a home
page which reminds us of that fact
while also boring interested high
schoolers. I wonder why the traffic
is down- maybe they lose interest
after seeing the first page. This
better be an April fools joke!!

Institutionalized, boring, run of the

I always thought the color sucked on
this page anyway. What do you need all
those colors for anyway? I think Georgia
Tech is doing a fine job in addressing
these problems of color. The less color
the better. Now they just need to change
the fight song to something less
colorful. COLOR SUCKS! GREYSCALE RULES!

i would think the homepage is a major

Subject: (grayscale) The Graying of the GT Homepage
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We at Georgia Tech have always prided
ourselves on having a first rate
homepage that is both informative and
visually attractive. The new black and
white format is both harder on the eyes
and also has a "second rate" look to it.
It lacks the professionalism that the
old format provided to our homepage. I
am sorely disappointed with this change,
which will no doubt hurt our recruitment
of top notch high school students.

Ah, correct you are (er, were). It was indead us, the administrators,
that did change the page (though it was blessed ahead of time by
the mysterious "powers that be"). It was our third anual AF home page
switcheroo, and in my opinion, our best (I wish I could share the

The home page is now back to normal, but the AF version is still
